Studies
Every study Tidal can add to a chart — 81 of them — grouped the way the study menu groups them. Each page has a live chart you can retune, what the study measures, how traders use it, and what every setting does.
The charts run on a seeded random walk, not real market data, so they show the shape of each study rather than a trading signal.Trend
Is there a trend, which way, and how strong? Moving averages and the classic trend systems.
AroonMeasures how long ago the highest high and the lowest low of the window happened, not how far away they are. Bollinger BandsA moving average with a band above and below it, each a set number of standard deviations away. Elder Ray (Bull and Bear Power)Measures how far each bar's high got above a 13-bar EMA of the close (bull power) and how far its low got below it (bear power). Exponential Moving Average (EMA)An average that weights recent bars more heavily than older ones, fading the past away gradually rather than dropping it off a cliff. Swing IndexWilder's attempt at the "real" price change of one bar. Trend Intensity Index (TII)Takes how far price has been from its long moving average over recent bars and reports what share of that distance was above the average, as 0 to 100. Vertical Horizontal Filter (VHF)Net movement divided by total movement over the window: the distance from the highest to the lowest close, divided by the sum of every bar-to-bar change. Vortex IndicatorCompares how far today's high reached above yesterday's low (upward movement) with how far today's low reached below yesterday's high (downward movement), each summed over the window and divided by the true range. Momentum
How fast price is moving and whether that speed is fading: the overbought / oversold oscillators.
Chande Forecast Oscillator (CFO)How far the price is from the value a straight-line fit of recent prices would have predicted for today, as a percentage of price. Commodity Channel Index (CCI)How far the typical price (high + low + close) ÷ 3 is from its moving average, measured in mean absolute deviations and scaled so that most readings fall between −100 and +100. Fisher TransformPuts each bar’s midpoint on a −1 to +1 scale within its recent range, then stretches the ends with a mathematical transform so turning points show up as sharp spikes instead of gentle curves. MomentumToday’s price minus the price N bars ago, in price units. Prime Number OscillatorThe distance from the price to the prime number nearest to it, positive when price is above that prime and negative when below. Psychological LineThe percentage of the last N bars that closed higher than the bar before. Relative Vigor Index (RVI)The candle body (close − open) as a fraction of the bar’s range (high − low), lightly smoothed and summed over the window. Stochastic OscillatorWhere the close sits within the high-low range of the last N bars, as 0 to 100: 100 is a close at the top of the range, 0 at the bottom. Stochastic RSIThe stochastic formula applied to RSI instead of price: where RSI sits within its own recent range, 0 to 100. Ultimate OscillatorBuying pressure (the close relative to the true low) as a share of true range, averaged over three windows (7, 14 and 28 bars) and combined with the shortest weighted most. Williams %RHow far the close is below the highest high of the window, as a percentage of the range, from 0 (closed at the high) to −100 (closed at the low). Moving-average oscillators
Momentum read from the gap between moving averages, or from smoothed rates of change: MACD and its relatives.
Coppock CurveAdds a 14-period and an 11-period percent rate of change together and smooths the sum with a 10-period weighted moving average. Know Sure Thing (KST)Pring's momentum line: four rates of change over 10, 15, 20 and 30 bars, each smoothed, weighted 1, 2, 3 and 4 and added up. Price Momentum Oscillator (PMO)DecisionPoint's momentum line: the one-bar percent change, smoothed twice with custom exponential averages and scaled by ten, with a 10-bar EMA as a signal line. Pring’s Special KAn extended Know Sure Thing: twelve smoothed rates of change instead of four, in short-term, intermediate and long-term groups reaching out to 530 bars. Schaff Trend Cycle (STC)Takes a MACD and runs a stochastic over it twice, so it is rescaled to 0 to 100 against its own recent range. TRIXThe one-bar percent change of a triple-smoothed EMA. Bands and channels
Lines above and below price that mark how far is a normal move, and studies built from them.
ATR BandsTwo lines placed a multiple of the Average True Range above and below the price itself. Bollinger %BWhere the price sits inside its Bollinger Bands, as a fraction: 1 is on the upper band, 0 on the lower band, 0.5 on the middle. Bollinger BandWidthHow wide the Bollinger Bands are, as a percentage of the middle band: 100 × (upper − lower) ÷ middle. Donchian ChannelThe highest high and the lowest low of the last N bars, plus the halfway line between them. Prime Number BandsFor each bar, the nearest prime number at or above the high and the nearest prime at or below the low. Volatility
How much the market is moving, regardless of direction.
Chaikin VolatilitySmooths the high-low range of each bar with an EMA, then reports the percent change in that smoothed range over a number of bars. Choppiness IndexCompares the total distance price travelled (the sum of true ranges) with the ground it actually covered (the window’s high-to-low range), on a 0 to 100 scale. Historical VolatilityThe standard deviation of daily log returns over the window, annualized by multiplying by the square root of the number of trading periods in a year. Mass IndexWatches for the range of bars widening relative to its own average, ignoring direction. Realized VolatilityTurns a daily variance into an annualized volatility in percent: the square root of (variance × 252), times 100. Ulcer IndexA volatility measure that only counts the downside. Volume
Whether trading activity is backing the price move: buying and selling pressure.
Chaikin Money Flow (CMF)The accumulation/distribution idea averaged over a window instead of totalled forever: for each bar, where it closed in its range, weighted by volume, then averaged. Chaikin OscillatorA MACD of the Accumulation/Distribution line: a 3-bar EMA of A/D minus a 10-bar EMA. Force IndexThe bar’s price change times its volume, smoothed with an EMA. Klinger Volume OscillatorBuilds a "volume force" from volume, the bar’s range and whether the bar’s typical price rose or fell, then takes a fast EMA minus a slow EMA of it, with a signal line. Money Flow Index (MFI)RSI calculated on money flow (typical price × volume) instead of on price, so big-volume days count for more. On-Balance Volume (OBV)A running total of volume: a bar that closes up adds its whole volume, a bar that closes down subtracts it. Positive Volume Index (PVI)The twin of the Negative Volume Index: it only moves on days when volume rose, compounding that day’s price change. Rolling VWAPThe average price weighted by volume over the last N bars, using each bar’s typical price. Trade Volume Index (TVI)A running total of volume like OBV, but a bar only changes direction when the close moves by more than a minimum amount. Twiggs Money FlowA variant of Chaikin Money Flow that measures each bar against the true range (so gaps are counted) and uses smooth exponential averaging instead of a fixed window. Statistical
Plain statistics over a rolling window: regression, z-score, extremes and percentiles.
Linear RegressionFits a straight line through the last N closes (least squares) and reports five facts about that line: where it ends today, how steep it is, where it started, its angle, and how well a straight line explains the prices (R²). Time Series Forecast (TSF)The same straight-line fit as Linear Regression, extended one bar further: where the recent trend line says the next bar would land. Z-ScoreHow many standard deviations the price is from its moving average over the window. Price transforms
One-number summaries of a bar, mostly used as the input to another study.
Median PriceThe midpoint of the bar’s range: (high + low) ÷ 2. Typical PriceThe average of the high, low and close: (high + low + close) ÷ 3. Weighted CloseThe average of the high, low and the close counted twice: (high + low + 2 × close) ÷ 4. Not in Tidal yet
